'In the summer of ‘73, Bruce and the E Street Band felt like our little secret, the soundtrack to the best time of our lives.'
ByIt was a half century ago … in the glorious summer of 1973 … that we rented a bungalow in South Belmar for $180 apiece … and got to know Bruce Springsteen.
And when I say, “the Glorious Summer of 1973,” I mean, truly, was there ever a better summer to be 19 years old? In January, the U.S. had signed a peace agreement with North Vietnam ending the Vietnam War … and removing the threat of the draft for us. Almost simultaneously, the State of New Jersey lowered the legal drinking age to 18.Not that my gang was unfamiliar with demon alcohol prior to 1973.
On bright Saturdays, sandy and sunburned, we’d enjoy Belmar’s 18th Avenue beach with all the gang from Jersey City followed by “5 beers for a Dollar” at D’Jais, served in skinny neck juice glasses. Back at the bungalow, one of the guys who went to Rutgers had a record album by this guy Springsteen … local cat … strange name. The album cover featured an Asbury Park postcard, which definitely caught your eye.“Kip, get that off!” one of the other guys would scream from upstairs. But after a week or so, the rest of us had become obsessed with Springsteen, too.
Then back on stage, Bruce dedicated the first song of the second set, “Blinded by the Light,” to “some dudes who came all the way from Jersey City.”By 1978, Bruce Springsteen was playing far beyond Shore clubs. Here, he's in concert at New York's Madison Square Garden on Aug. 21, 1978.
