The future of Texas is Hispanic — and Republican | Opinion

The assumption that Hispanics, and especially Hispanic women, have to vote for Democrats is based on a monolithic view of our heritage and our culture

For too long, Hispanic Republicans have been asked to apologize for who they are as if it were impossible to be Hispanic and conservative at the same time. During my campaign for the Texas State House in 2020, I got asked about it so much that I wrote a letter explaining why a young Hispanic woman would be a conservative.

Now, as a small business owner, I am more committed than ever to make sure that we have a strong economy and low inflation, because every penny counts and every decision matters. My community cares deeply about what is best for our families and businesses. We believe in the strength that comes from faith and family. These principles are our strengths as Hispanics — but they’re also priorities that we share with all Texans.

While Hispanics have been voting for Democrats, there’s been long evidence of the power, nuanced stances, and deep commitment in the Hispanic community for conservative values and Republican candidates. I often point to historian and scholar Geraldo Cadava’sfor an excellent analysis of why, due to “a nuanced and varied cultural identity, the Republican party has had a much longer and stronger bond with Hispanics.
