The WNBA's first president offers advice to the league amidst ongoing negotiations with the WNBPA:
However, the announcement this week that the two sides have agreed to an extension until December 31 sets up an interesting remainder of the year, a chance to re-define the financial structure of the league, and find a working relationship that satisfies both players and owners alike.
“To create a synergistic approach to the landscape,” Ackerman said during an interview earlier this month. “I mean, noncompeting seasons, it's WNBA in the summer, college basketball in the winter. You have no early entry, in the WNBA, and I was part of that. That was our rule from the beginning and players have kind of accepted it.
About those salaries: including European off-season worked was baked into the initial model. Ackerman wonders now, though, about the utility of that going forward. And Ackerman said that will come down to fan support, but acknowledged that there’s a potential to jumpstart that fan support surge with some investment on the league side as well.
“Do you really want to go up against the NBA, college basketball men and women, and all the other sports? Is there a shifting of the season? They should probably look at that, and then it's going to be the leadership piece,” Ackerman said. “I mean they’re just going to have to have people who know what they're doing, who understand all these nuances, understand the game, understand the business.
