1916-17: The Exhibition features stunt flying exhibitions by American pilot Katherine Stinson, also known as “Victory Stampede At the first Calgary Stampede, in September 1912, the Governor General of Canada, the Duke of Connaught, passed under a wooden arch painted to look like marble and festooned with lights on Centre Street. A sign on the arch read “God Save the King. Calgary Welcomes Their Royal Highnesses.” His Royal Highness, the Duke, was Queen Victoria’s third son, making him the uncle of then reigning King George V. Glenbow Archives photo NA-335-93.
