If you're paying $390,000+ for Ferrari's first SUV, you expect more than what you get on a Subaru Outback.
is the Italian automaker's first SUV and it certainly looks the part. With a sloped, fastback design; four doors; increased ride height; and big wheels, there's no mistaking it for——a car. It even has wheel arches outlined in black like all other SUVs—but don't let that turn you off. These aren't theExamine the Purosangue closely and you'll notice immediately its wheel arches are actually set slightly away from the body to form a"floating" look.
The arches do this in a couple of ways. First, they have front-facing louvers that work in conjunction with the outside edges of the front bumper to form an"air curtain" over the front wheels. This keeps airflow tight over the wheel's surface and ensures the resulting wheel wake keeps as close to the side of the body as possible.
The rear arches have their own louvers, but these pull air from the wheel housing. Because of their shape, they also function to—you guessed it—reduce drag by improving the airflow's detachment point against the body sides. We're always fans of when form has a function, and unlike in most SUVs, the Purosangue's aren't there simply to make it look more"rugged." And they do have another, more typical function: protecting the paint around the wheel wells from stone chips.
