Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy watches from the sidelines during the first half of an NFL football game against the Washington Football Team at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021, in Arlington. At the old halfway mark of the season, it was all about The Big Five in the NFC. Arizona, Los Angeles and Green Bay were riding high at 7-1 while Dallas and defending Super Bowl champ Tampa Bay were just a step behind at 6-2. All seemed powerful. All seemed worthy.
What happened to the Cowboys’ streak and their own sense of confidence that this was a special team, not another one-and-done show in the playoffs? Did it all vanish just because a good team showed up in Arlington on Sunday? Even Dak Prescott, more levelheaded than most, weighed in with this after the loss to Arizona: “We’ll play against whoever. We’ll play against 11 and the others if we have to. I’ve become accustomed to it honestly. I don’t know if we ever get things to go our way, but we can’t sit there and gripe about it.”
