“This was an arranged marriage, but they genuinely loved each other,” says Imelda Staunton. “I think it was very admirable how they managed their life.”

“This was an arranged marriage, but they genuinely loved each other,” says Staunton. “And I think that was quite a good bedrock to build this relationship that was going to be tested. Philip was a very strong-minded man having to be metaphorically two steps behind this woman when he could have easily run the whole show. But he knew his position and accepted that—maybe reluctantly or whatever at the beginning—but they realized what they had to do within the business of the royal family.

“He ran the family business,” explains Pryce. “And you see that with Diana. He tells Diana that the family is structured in such a way and if you step outside that structure, life is going to be difficult for you. You can have the life you want, as long as you play within our rules. It was sound advice.”

“It was a brief moment after Philip died when Charles was interviewed about his father,” recalls Pryce. “Everyone else in the documentary, all the grandchildren, said what a wonderful grandfather he was and they adored him. Charles also said he adored him, but gave away a little bit of the difficulty that he had with his father in that his father rarely approved of him. That’s a very common father-son dynamic.
