According to creators Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, bringing Amazon's Undone to life was a labor-intensive 18-month process
“The fear was—if people are getting these implants—they’ll be taken away from the community. They’ll no longer be a part of it. It’s a very tight-knit, interactive, loving, emotionally connected community. The language is so visual. It’s so emotional in expression. They were worried about losing their language,” Purdy said. “And if you look at any kind of culture, once you lose your language, it’s really hard to maintain the culture and identity.
“Alma’s been raised more from a place of privilege without that experience of hatred,” Purdy said. Like many younger Latinxs, she’s more open to claiming her indigenous roots. But her movement toward this language might have something to do with being denied the deaf community she was originally a part of too. For me, my family, my entire lineage, and all of humanity for all time, past, present, and future: Help us all to love each other and love ourselves, forgive each other and forgive ourselves, be at peace with each other and be at peace with ourselves. “The past shapes our present,” Purdy added. “It exists with us in a physical space and an emotional space. We’re carrying it. If I don’t look at it, if I don’t understand it, then I’m less capable to understand my present.”are jettisoning linear time for another form of storytelling, one that jumps backward and forward, often treating the past as if it is the present.
