'Even as I am horrified and heartbroken by the onslaught of bleak headlines, I will hold on to the belief that something better is possible because people want it.'

Luxemburg succinctly summarized how to handle both approaches in the project of improving the world for the working class.

“Legislative reform and revolution are not different methods of historic development that can be picked out at the pleasure from the counter of history, just as one chooses hot or cold sausages,” . “In the history of classes, revolution is the act of political creation, while legislation is the political expression of the life of a society that has already come into being.”be skeptical of the governments that rule over us today, but that doesn’t mean there is no potential to create systems of governance we can shape for the better.

For me, faith in any democratic government ultimately relies on faith in the people. I maintain hope that people across this country could create better systems if given the chance. Even as I agonize over whether they’ll get a chance — because a few powerful people have the forces of inertia, scarcity, and now the pandemic to help maintain a harmful status quo — I believe in the spirit of something that can get us closer than we are now.

I have faith in every person who looks at the world and wishes it were more just, more equitable, and an easier place to survive. Even as I am horrified and heartbroken by the onslaught of bleak headlines, I will hold on to the belief that something better is possible because people want it.
