The city says the bill is for overtime costs incurred during the investigation, and wants the amount paid within seven days.
The city of Chicago wants Jussie Smollett to pay more than $130,000 to help cover the cost of the police investigation into claims that he was the victim of a violent hate crime.
"The city feels this is a legal and reasonable amount to offset the costs of the investigation," Bill McCaffrey, a spokesman for the city's legal office, told BuzzFeed News on Thursday.A representative for Smollett did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but in a statement to"It is the mayor and the police chief who owe Jussie — owe him an apology — for dragging an innocent man's character through the mud," the attorneys said.
Smollett, on the other hand, has maintained in public statements that he has been truthful about the attack, pitting city leaders and the actor in a public confrontation of conflicting accounts. Smollett claimed two men attacked him on Jan. 29 while yelling racist and ant-gay slurs and pouring a bleach-like liquid on him. He also said they put a rope around his head and at one point yelled,"This is MAGA country!"
