I still reach for Pride and Prejudice on the baggy days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve while hiding from reality in a candlelit bath I was in Year 11 at school. My English teacher insisted that she was “an Elizabeth Bennet”, Austen’s independently minded bookish heroine who refuses to compromise, and has since been turned into a regency feminist icon for girls who like books the world over.
This is not because I think it wise to model oneself on Bennet. Quite the opposite, but more on that in a moment. It is because it is my firm belief that Austen remains the most incisive chronicler of wealth, class and how they impact relationships. An admiration of Jane Austen is often regarded as a trait worthy of mocking. Indeed, so sure are some readers that she is not worthy of our time that Giles Coren, theTo Coren, Austen was just “an average chick-lit writer of her day”, who could never hold a candle to his personal literary hero, William Shakespeare.
But putting his casual garden variety sexism to one side, Coren is just one of many who has totally understood the point of Austen and, for that matter, “chick lit” as a genre. The subjects which Austen chose to write on – love and the banal machinations of everyday life – are universal. I doubt there is anyone who has not devoted a portion of their life to the pursuit of love as much as I would put money on the fact that everyone returns home at the end of the day and moans about something someone else has done.
