Our region was rocked by murders, stabbings, fatal crashes and fires - while storms hit and vital reports were finally released

Some of the biggest national news stories of the year included the death of Her Majesty The Queen, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the election of two new Prime Minister's. And locally, our region was the centre of some huge breaking new stories.

CCTV footage showed revellers waving what appeared to be champagne 'flares' and sparklers before the blaze broke out. Screams and loud popping noises could be heard as burning bunches of balloons fell to the ground and revellers ran for safety. January 10 - Nadia Yusuf, 17, dies in crash on Mancunian Way Nadia Yusuf died after a white Mercedes she was a passenger in struck a railway bridge on the Mancunian Way at around 11.45pm on January 10. The 17-year-old was sitting in the front seat.

This is now in force between Chester Road to the Pin Mill Brow junction and will be in place for at least 18 months, but could be made permanent, the council said. CCTV footage shown at Manchester Crown Court showed Campos walking with his girlfriend along Hilton Street and Mr Singh, who was making his way home from work, passing them. Campos then gestured towards Mr Singh and started following him towards Tib Street. July 3 - Alleged murder of Thomas Campbell in Tameside Thomas Campbell was found dead at his home on Riverside in Mossley by a neighbour on July 3. Police said they believed he was fatally assaulted the previous night and died from the injuries he sustained.

The Recorder of Manchester, Judge Nicholas Dean QC, said a hearing would be held on January 13 ahead of the trial on February 6, which is expected to last up to 10 days.

September 17 - Alleged murder of Callum Riley in Heywood Callum Riley was found badly injured in the garden of a property on Atholl Drive in Heywood on September 17. The 17-year-old sadly died a short time later. In a statement confirming her death Buckingham Palace wrote: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

The dig began on Saddleworth Moor after cops were shown a photograph taken at the site by author and amateur sleuth Russell Edwards. He had shown it to other experts, who said it appeared to show part of a child's jaw bone. Police were first called to reports of a 'disturbance'. The three men appeared before Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court earlier this month have now been remanded in custody. Police said they had uncovered CCTV of the gunman arriving and then leaving in a vehicle, but not of the shooting itself. In the latest update, they said the gun has not yet been found.
