Mona Awad’s “Rouge” and other new novels by Hannah Kaner, Wole Talabi and Nghi Vo greet readers with horror and humanity.

Speaking of gods, in Wole Talabi’s delightfully entertaining novel, every major religion in our world has become a capitalist enterprise, competing for holy market share, including the orishas worshiped in Yoruba culture. Shigidi, a god of nightmares, used to work for the Orisha spirit company, but now he’s an independent contractor, partnered with a succubus named Nneoma — until a corporate power struggle forces the pair of divinities to pull off an impossible heist.

And yet Talabi’s snarky narration keeps the tone light, while leaving room for a sweet love story.Since 2020, Nghi Vo has been publishing acclaimed novellas about Cleric Chih, who travels across a Chinese-inspired fantasy world and collects stories, usually in the company of a talking bird with an eidetic memory. In “Mammoths,” the fourth in the series, Chih returns home to the Singing Hills abbey at last, only to find that its leader, Cleric Thien, has died.

Novel material enables an ultrafast electron diffraction probe for quantum materialsNovel material enables an ultrafast electron diffraction probe for quantum materialsQuantum materials have a host of exotic electronic, magnetic, and optical properties that make them prime candidates for use in future computing and energy technologies. Their properties arise from a complex interaction of their electrons and atomic nuclei. Researchers can observe these interactions as they happen using short pulses of X-rays or electron beams. These pulses last less than a trillionth of a second.
