We tasted brands dedicated to sustainable, eco-friendly fishing practices, but we also included the most popular supermarket brands in our test, even if they didn't rank high for sustainability.
Another canned tuna distinction to note is whether it's packed in oil or water. On its own, oil-packed tuna tastes much better than water-packed, but when it comes to making tuna salad sandwiches and everyday pantry needs, we figure most people are buying their tuna in water. In the end, we focused our taste test on canned albacore tuna packed in water. We only tasted salted tuna since that's the default for both customers and brands .
To conduct the tasting, we strained the cans and placed each tuna brand in separate bowls to test blind. They weren't doctored up at all.First of all, we wanted to actually taste the flavor of tuna. This wasn't a given—you'd be surprised at how many canned tunas are shockingly bland. We didn't want any metallic notes, mustiness, or rancid fishy flavor, all of which we encountered at some point. Texturally, the canned tunas were split between being ultra-dry or wet and mushy.
Of course, when choosing canned tuna, taste isn't the only factor one should consider. We were also looking for a tuna that's good for the environment. Luckily—and unsurprisingly—our final recommendation didn't come down to a moral quandary: the most sustainably caught fish also happens to be the best tasting. You might pay a little bit more, but there's really no excuse not to choose the canned tuna that's best for the planet.
