The phrase “420” was almost certainly invented in the Bay Area in the early 1970s. But who said it first? That’s a controversial question.

The Waldos also have various letters from the 1970s referencing 420 and a handmade “420” flag with a pot leaf on it that they say was made at San Rafael High School in 1972. Capper, one of the Waldos, defended the timing of their search by saying that some of their friends were on the football team and needed to practice before meeting up.

This claim is backed up by Saunders, who told SFGATE that there were no bongs in San Rafael until 1973. He also said that the first time he heard 420 was from Dixon himself in 1972, who said “420 Louis” and told Saunders it was about the Waldos smoking pot at the statue before looking for a weed farm.

Naturally, the Waldos claim the photo is fake. Dave Reddix, one of the Waldos, said that Dixon had shown him that same photo multiple times in the 1980s, and Dixon’s clothing never had numbers on it.Both right? The controversy isn’t likely to be settled anytime soon. There are serious doubts as to whether anyone can truly find out what happened 50 years ago in a sleepy community across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
