You can still see the first Fuddruckers on Botts Lane, near Loop 410 in San Antonio.
and Macaroni Grill created Romano's 300 in Palm Beach, Fla. The restaurant was as much of a favorite as it was for King Hussein of Jordan, who would dine nowhere else in the Sunshine State and once hosted a $4,087 luncheon for 10.
While a success, it took about a year to become established. It wasn’t until October 1981 that the firm expanded and opened its first Houston restaurant. Fuddruckers started with just the name and 10 local investors, including Herbert Kelleher, the former president of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines. Then-Mayor Henry Cisneros, left, congratulates entrepreneur Phil Romano at the August 1985 opening of the Fuddruckers burger restaurant in Alamo Plaza.Romano said he was able to spend so much money on better ingredients because he spent practically nothing on the eating area. That area looked like a cross between a warehouse and a country and western dance hall.
Fuddruckers had seen a number of owners over the years, including Magic Brands LLC, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010. Shortly afterward, Luby’s Inc. bought the franchise at an auction that was finalized later that year.
