Former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder accepted $60 mil. in campaign cash from FirstEnergy knowing the money came with the expectation of passing a $1.3 bil. legislative bailout, an assistant U.S. Attorney said simply in his closing argument Tuesday.
Singer pointed jurors toward trial evidence showing even though FirstEnergy and its operatives bought Householder’s hotel room, flew him on a corporate jet, and paid for his meals, Householder failed to disclose any of these gifts on his annual financial disclosure forms required under state ethics laws.
“There’s a reason they’re complicated,” he said. “There’s a reason the money is moved from different accounts and different entities. That’s concealment.”That includes a claim from Householder that he never ate dinner with FirstEnergy executives that weekend, despite a photo taken just after 10 p.m. in a limousine outside the restaurant where Householder said he never stepped inside.“He did not tell the truth in his testimony about his trip to Washington, D.C.,” he said.
