The bank in Columbia, Ala., is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

No customers were inside the bank when the men entered. Mornings were often slow at a bank in a town the size of Columbia, which was home to about 780 folks, a 20-minute drive from the busy hub of Dothan. By Friday afternoon, business would likely pick up, with people needing to deposit paychecks or wanting cash for the weekend. The only other people in the bank that morning were bank president Walter Oakley, and Oakley’s wife Florrie, who served as the bank’s bookkeeper.
