Despite occasional, literal downpours, metaphorically, nothing could rain on Houston’s parade.

The 73rd Annual H-E-B Thanksgiving Day Parade drew thousands — albeit not the usual packed crowd — to downtown, then drenched them as sudden storms briefly had attendees vacillating between umbrellas and the under-hangs of central business district buildings.

The annual parade skipped the past two years. Officials canceled it in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic and last year pulled the plug because of high winds. Officials said the parade would go on “rain or shine” and meant it. Festivities started around 9 a.m. and continued despite sometimes the skies opening. Officials had said previously that only lightning or heavy rains would halt the parade, which Mayor Sylvester Turner wanted to see return after the two-year absence.

Attendees were in a similar frame of mind, they said, after enduring months of at-home schooling, then the stresses of life and students returning to school.
