Texas teachers reported spending less of their money on classrooms than the national average, based on one survey, but that still amounted to around $703 of their funds and may reflect a limit on what they can spend despite rising needs. Via HoustonChron

“The needs are increasing, but the ability of teachers to close the gap is not changing,” said Ryan Jordan, senior vice president of operations, programs and technology for AdoptAClassroom.org. Elementary and intermediate teachers frequently have out-of-pocket expenses that schools do not supply or reimburse, Freemyer said.
The lists often include such basic supplies as dry-erase markers, pencils and notebooks. In theory, many of those would be brought by students as a part of their school supply lists. In reality, students from financial struggling families frequently show up at school without them. Jarrod Morris, a social studies teacher at Caney Creek High School in the Conroe Independent School District, already has spent more than $200 in the past month on supplies for his classroom, including posters, notebooks, folders, paper, printer ink and laminating pieces.
Conroe ISD campuses maintain a basic inventory of supplies such as tape, staples, post-it notes and pens, district spokesperson Sarah Blakelock said. Each campus is given a budget that they allocate to subject-area departments or grade-level teams for other supplies, including markers and paints.
