The Texas legislature passed a bill that bans transgender public-school students from competing in interscholastic sports leagues that are designated for a gender other than the one listed on their birth certificates
to include private organizations setting requirements for their employees. He added the issue to the agenda of the legislature’s special session and said he would rescind his order when lawmakers passed a similar bill., business organizations and healthcare providers. Lawmakers filed a similar bill but have taken no further action on it. With the session ending Tuesday, it remains in an initial committee without a vote.
Republicans characterized the measure on transgender students as a way to protect fairness in girls’ sports against competitors who might be stronger or taller. “We are standing up for our daughters and granddaughters, standing up for their right to compete in sports and all the opportunities in life that flow from that,” said Rep. Valoree Swanson, a Republican who sponsored the bill. “Biological males have an unfair advantage over girls in sports.
Democrats questioned the measure’s necessity, noting that lawmakers had found no cases of a transgender student taking a competitive spot from another student. They called the bill an attack on transgender children and an invitation for bullying. “We heard kids pleading to not put their life to be debated by legislators and talking about the harm it would have on them, and yet here we are,” said Rep. Jessica González. “We are trying to solve this problem that doesn’t exist.
The state House passed the bill, 76-54, at 3 a.m. Friday after an all-day debate. The state Senate the next day waived rules that would normally require notice for a public hearing to quickly pass the bill, with some changes. The House approved it again Sunday.
