This year is the first midterm election cycle since the Texas Legislature voted to do away with straight-ticket voting, which used to allow a voter to pick every Republican or Democrat on the ballot without going through every single race.That’s a big change in Harris County where straight-ticket voting was very popular in 2018. Of the 1.2 million ballots cast in 2018 in Harris County, 932,000 were straight-ticket votes. That is over 76 percent.
In the 2018 midterm, 515,000 Democratic voters in Harris County used straight ticket voting compared to 410,000 Republican voters. Many Republicans have blamed straight-ticket voting for why so many Republicans lost in Harris County in 2018.
