Fresh off a Big 12 tournament championship, Texas earned its first No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament since 2008.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Texas landed the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region in this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament. The Longhorns will face No. 15 seed Colgate, the Patriot League tournament champion, Thursday in the first round in Des Moines, Iowa.
Texas enters the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the nation. It beat Kansas by 16 in its regular-season finale then won three games in three days to claim the Big 12 tournament championship., Texas graduate forward Brock Cunningham struck a pragmatic tone. Texas has been led by interim coach Rodney Terry since Dec. 12, the day the university suspended second-year coach Chris Beard following his arrest on a felony domestic violence charge. Texas fired Beard for cause Jan. 5 The Travis County district attorney dismissed the felony charge against Beard Feb. 16, and he's recently been linked to the Ole Miss job opening.
“If you watch the locker room afterwards, a lot of praise going to RT ,” Big 12 sixth man of the year Sir’Jabari Rice said after Saturday’s win over Kansas. “Just everything that we've been through, I mean, for us to get to this point right now, especially to win it is like – it's not us. We're playing the game but our preparation comes from him, so everything is RT.”
