Clear Creek latest Texas school district to change class rank system, dropping electives penalties
Clear Lake High School graduating seniors attend a graduation ceremony at Clear Creek ISD's Challenger Columbia Stadium.this week joined a handful of other Texas districts to change its class ranking system so that students will no longer be penalized for taking arts, athletics and other classes with normal GPA weights.
“Out of all analyses of students who were in the top 10 or 6 percent…the difference in their class rank came down to taking level one or level two electives,” said Robert Bayard, Clear Creek's deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction, at the Monday night meeting. Texas passed a law in 1997 that required state-funded universities in the state to allow all students in the top 10 percent of their class to enroll. However, UT Austin had to scale back to a lower percentage due to high interest in the institution.
“We want to do their very best, no matter what class they take, and not feel like because of the course they take that their class rank will be diminished,” said Bayard in the district's Car Rider Line podcast. In Houston ISD, the state’s largest district, class rank is based on the GPA of all courses, including electives, with some caveats. Students are able to opt-in to having some elective class numeric grades converted into pass or fail. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, the third largest district in the state, has a similar system.
