Texas Children’s Hospital exposed employees to assault from aggressive patients, Labor Department finds
Texas Children's Hospital was cited this week by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration for failing to adopt policies to protect employees from being assaulted by aggressive patients, the agency said on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.cited by the U.S. Department of Labor
The agency’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said there were 15 “recordable” incidents last year in which visibly aggressive patients attacked employees, according to a copy of the citation. In one incident, a security officer had been responding to an alert on Nov. 10, 2022, when an “aggressive patient” pulled them to the ground by the hair and kicked them repeatedly in the chest and abdomen, OSHA said. The officer lost consciousness and was hospitalized, the documents said.
“The safety of the employees, faculty and patients remains a key priority at Texas Children’s Hospital and we are very proud of our efforts to provide a safe workplace,” Texas Children’s said in a statement. “We are actively engaged in dialogue with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and disagree with the initial findings released by OSHA.
“Healthcare employers must protect their employees, particularly those in contact with aggressive or potentially aggressive patients, from the danger of being attacked by a patient,” Briggs said. “Employers must have certain effective policies and procedures in place so employees don’t have to work in fear of their safety.”
