I am the editor of independent electric vehicle website WhichEV. I have 30 years’ experience as a technology journalist and a life-long love of cars, so having the two come together has been a dream come true. I first saw the potential for electric vehicles when I became one of the first people to drive a Nissan Leaf back in 2011.
MG has historically been famous for its open top sports cars, but since the MG F and TF has been better known for cheap family vehicles. Finally, MG is back with a new roadster, and befitting the company’s general push towards electrification, it’s an EV. I got to put the new MG Cyberster through its paces at the UK launch in Scotland, and I was mightily impressed., the production car isn’t that far away. It still has scissor doors, and the basic shape is similar.
The Cyberster is not a 2+2. It’s resolutely a two-seater. The driving position is low and reclined, as you’d expect for a roadster. There are only two interior options, and there’s no fee for either. The grey option is the most sober, while the black and red is quite ostentatious, but still reasonably classy. Both use “leather style” and Alcantara, so no real leather option is available. The seats are electrically adjusted with controls on the door and memory functions for both sides.
Although the Cyberster looks fantastic, it would be a pointless endeavor if it didn’t back that up with an engaging driving experience. It does this in spades. I got to try both the single and dual motor variants, and they had similar but slightly different charms. The all-wheel-drive GT is a brute, with an incredible turn of straight-line acceleration in Sport and Supersport modes. It’s also quite hard to get out of shape, even in moist road conditions.
