After three decades of triumphalist corporate globalism, the world is cut in two again
, Xi and Assad and Ali Khamenei and Putin have done the carving. The full-on Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed everything. And even so, we haven’t seen anything yet. At least 42,000 dead, 1.4 million people rendered homeless, and Ukraine’s friends in the NATO countries still can’t persuade the liberal democracies that Russia should join Syria and Iran has an officially-recognized state sponsor of terrorism.
“I think this would put us even more squarely in the territory of reprisals by Russia,” says William Pellerin, a partner with the law firm McMillan LLP and formerly a Global Affairs lawyer. Like that would be such a bad thing? “It certainly raises risks for Canadian businesses abroad.” Even better, then.
