An Ohio House bill that prohibits minors from using puberty blockers, hormones or undergoing gender surgery – even when their parents consent to the medical treatments – was amended this week to include a transgender female sports ban.
Republicans called the bill the Ohio Saving Adolescents from Experimentation Act, or SAFE Act.
As with the sports ban, numerous members of the LGBTQ community flooded the Statehouse to oppose the bill. Some parents told lawmakers that passage of the medical ban would mean they would have to move, since they did not want to deny their children what they believe is necessary care. The Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, which represents several health care facilities that offer transgender medical services and clinics, opposes HB 68.
