None of this is valid, especially that last bit of anti-market mythology enshrined as dogma across the Canadian regulatory bureaucracy and backed by numerous activist supporters of government control over the economy. It is now accepted belief across Canada and ritually recited as a kind of prayerful motivational mantra: Oh, ye mighty gods of regulation, our cellphone rates are among the highest in the world due to a lack of competition. And so, please, something must be done.

Sources for such beliefs are studies that claim to compare wireless costs across the world. I mentioned this in my past column. A typical example is the Helsinki-based Rewheel Research, which produced aconclusion last year: “Canada’s wireless costs continue to be the highest or among the highest in the world.
