At Comfort Station, an exhibition makes us consider the intimate and delicate relationships that humans can form with other living beings. | ✍️ mllecolettex
“Manifesto for Mutualistic Tendencies,” a highly collaborative exhibition by Chicago-based artists Kayla Anderson and Dao Nguyen, opened at Comfort Station on a stormy Sunday afternoon. With a splash of clairvoyance, a song sings “Drip. Drop. It’s raining so hard . . . ” in Anderson’s video,—an experimental short documentary on what humans deem to be the worst slug pest in Europe, as we see slugs slowly move across gravel and grass, nuzzle, snuggle, and twist affectionately.
An intriguing aspect of Dao’s work here is that it extends beyond the physical installation and fills the checklist with poetry. Some of the artwork descriptions include an incomprehensive list of materials used, as well as intangible ingredients: ceramic, shed black swallowtail skins, found objects—but also memories, time, an invitation, or a prompt. One reads: “Wander out and spend time with a being.
If the term “synanthropic” is too anthropocentric still, “symbiosis” is perhaps what this exhibition prompts us to think about—a way to truly remove our human agency over nature—the intimate and delicate relationships humans can form with living beings who sometimes come too close for comfort.
