Robertson reflects a divide among abortion opponents who share the goal of overturning Roe v. Wade but believe in different political and legal approaches to making it happen..
Televangelist Pat Robertson. By Sarah Pulliam Bailey Sarah Pulliam Bailey Reporter covering religion Email Bio Follow May 15 at 6:47 PM Longtime televangelist Pat Robertson decried Alabama’s new abortion ban as “extreme,” saying on his show on Wednesday that the state legislature has “gone too far.”
Robertson has used his show to regularly praise President Trump during his campaign and since his election. During brief remarks made on Wednesday’s show, the televangelist noted how Trump and then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton sparred over partial-birth abortion in a debate leading up to the 2016 election. He described Clinton’s views as “extreme” and appeared to suggest that Alabama’s law could be similarly viewed as “extreme” from the other side.
Abortion opponents have been pleased with Trump’s picks for the Supreme Court, where they believe justices are more likely to oppose abortion rights. Alabama Rep. Terri Collins wanted the legislation to be strong enough to force federal court intervention, so it could not include exceptions for rape and incest, she told The Washington Post.According to a 2014 Pew Research Center survey, 54 percent of Alabama adults said abortion should be illegal in most or all cases — one of the highest proportions in the country — while 40 percent said it should be legal in all or most cases.
“The American people want a fresh debate and a new direction, achieved by consensus and built on love for both mothers and babies,” she said in a statement. “The time is coming for the Supreme Court to let that debate go forward.”
