SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Sonny Dykes tried rebelling against football as a kid growing up in Lubbock. He failed, and college football has benefited.
“I started thinking about life without it,” Dykes said of pursuing a career sans pigskin. “And that’s what convinced me to get in.” That last part is especially remarkable for the West Texan with a smooth, measured delivery and mostly minus the one-liners and zingers that helped make his dad famous. A little more than a year ago TCU of Fort Worth introduced Dykes as the program’s 31st coach, in swiping him from rival SMU across the suburbs in Dallas.
