Britain’s once rare native breeds, which not so long ago were fighting to survive, are staging a remarkable comeback CapurrodDaniel reports:

“So many of them share a name with a county because that’s the scale at which they are intended to thrive,” he said. “We’ll be seeing more cattle in a variety of colours, with varying coats, some with horns, some without. It’ll make for a more diverse, exciting, attractive countryside.”

“We need to accept we have to eat less meat, because meat production is having a big global impact on consumption. So let’s value the pieces of meat we can, where we can, and connect back with their role within the landscape.”Aberdeen Angus is the “poster child” for native breeds, according to the Rare Breed Survival Trust, proving that the public will pay a premium for a named product.

Angus crosses made up 19 per cent of the UK’s beef industry in 2021. And full Anguses are also popular, making up four per cent of all British beef cattle.
