Taiwan will not bow to pressure from Beijing and will continue to bolster its defenses, its president says, a day after her Chinese counterpart vowed to realize a peaceful 'reunification' with the democratic island.

“Taiwan independence separatism is the biggest obstacle to achieving the reunification of the motherland, and the most serious hidden danger to national rejuvenation,” he said on the anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the last imperial dynasty in 1911.

Xi’s comments were greeted with an angry reaction from Taipei, which said only Taiwanese people can decide their future. It came amidinto Taiwan's air defence identification zone that have significantly picked up in recent weeks. "This is because the path that China has laid out offers neither a free and democratic way of life for Taiwan, nor sovereignty for our 23 million people,” she said.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokeperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office denounced Tsai's speech, telling the state-run Xinhua news agency that it incited confrontation and distorted facts.
