'We've opened a new window of observation on the universe,' said one researcher. 🤯 Astrophysics Science
The news is revealed in a study published on June 28 in theThe research brought together scientists from more than 50 institutions in the U.S. and abroad, including the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves , the National Science Foundation and the Flatiron Institute research division of the Simons Foundation.
In this artist’s interpretation, a pair of supermassive black holes emits gravitational waves that ripple through the fabric of space-time. Those gravitational waves compress and stretch the paths of radio waves emitted by pulsars . By carefully measuring the radio waves, a team of scientists recently made the first detection of the universe’s gravitational wave background.
"The large number of pulsars used in the NANOGrav analysis has enabled us to see what we think are the first signs of the correlation pattern predicted by," Xavier Siemens, co-director of the NANOGrav Physics Frontiers Center, said in a statement.
