NICOLE SULLIVAN / CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY MINES, N.S. — It doesn’t sound anything like him. But the legend of Emmett O’Connor began with him sitting on the couch for a week and a half doing nothing.
And volunteer he did — arguably more than anyone in Sydney Mines in the past 30 years. He and his wife volunteered so much that they were recognized in the House of Commons in 2014, after working their first 2,000 hours. “They did everything from church groups and entertainment to recreation. They also did bus trips and took people around the Cabot Trail. They did supper groups — taking people from rehab or adult day groups out for supper. Everything that a recreation person would want, they did that.”
“I always admired the volunteer work and the passion he’s put forward,” the Dist. 1 councillor said after attending O’Connor’s memorial service last week. “He was always an inspiration when you saw him go and do the things that he’d be doing.”“When I say that, I mean he made a difference in people’s lives. He encouraged people to put themselves out there and be proud of their accomplishments.”Pollock felt that difference from O’Connor in his life.
