May 27, 2024 at 09:44 AM ETPARIS — Rafael Nadal lost in the first round of the French Open to Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 , 6-3 on Monday in what might turn out to be the 14-time Roland Garros champion’s last match at his favorite tournament.

The match was played with the retractable roof shut at Court Philippe Chatrier, and the loud cheers for Nadal from most in the capacity crowd of about 15,000 echoed throughout.
