Calgary murder suspect Tarek Che Sharples will face a two-week jury trial beginning next April 15, in the fatal shooting of a city drug dealer.The lawyer also scheduled jury selection to take place on April 11, but erroneously asked it to start at 10 a.m. before being told by the trial coordinator it would start at 9:30.“April 11, 9:30, with or without Mr. Iovinelli,” Justice Glen Poelman quipped.
Sharples, 46, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the April 1, 2022, shooting death of drug dealer Jamie O’Leary.At Sharples preliminary inquiry in June, witness Ralph Piper, the father of O’Leary’s then-girlfriend, said he was working with his young granddaughter in the backyard of the home when he heard a single shot.
He told Iovinelli a handgun on the floor near the deceased’s body was hidden by his daughter before police arrived.Before Piper testified, Iovinelli told Justice John Bascom that he didn’t require a publication ban on the preliminary inquiry.
