A homicide suspect taken into custody following a police chase from one end of Jefferson County to another has been formally charged in the shooting death of a woman in Bessemer.
Tyler Malik Petty, 21, is charged with intentional murder in the Aug. 10 slaying of Kimberly Necole Hartsfield. He is also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle.Police responded at 12:12 a.m. Wednesday to a report of person shot in the 2600 block of Sixth Avenue North. They arrived to find Hartsfield in the street in front of a house, wounded by gunfire.
“My heart hurts so bad,’' said family member Carmen Merriweather. “She was loved by her family and friends.” Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons said investigators were able to identify Petty as a suspect in Hartsfield’s slaying. He also had outstanding warrants out of Tuscaloosa County. The chase traveled from Academy Drive to Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard and Appalachian Street in Birmingham. Police said Petty then fled the vehicle on foot but was quickly taken into custody.Clemons said a gun was recovered from the vehicle. A motive has not yet been disclosed.
