Many students surveyed said they felt they didn’t belong at colleges and universities.
Indigenous youth say they still face systemic barriers in their academic and professional careers, although there have been improvements, according to a new survey from accounting firm Deloitte.
Four participants were selected for follow-up interviews. The information from the surveys was supplemented by data from Statistics Canada and industry reconciliation specialists, including those at Deloitte. When Indigenous youth do enter the workplace, the study found they’re likely to face various forms of discrimination, including microaggressions, having their ideas ignored, not being assigned to favourable projects and being subject to stereotypes.
Participants agreed that many companies’ policies, programming and funding for Indigenous employees are a good first step, but they’re asking decision-makers “to go deeper now” and make these programs more accessible, Janvier added.
