More draconian steps are needed in the U.S., officials say, although they also cast doubt on whether Americans could do what the Chinese did, for a mixture of reasons, including political will and cultural inclinations.
In a Wednesday interview on Good Morning America, Surgeon General Jerome Adams said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had been asked to review its guidance on wearing masks.
"Even if you do wear a mask, it can't be at the expense of social distancing," he continued, noting a mask like an N95 would not be necessary because it could come at the expense of health care workers who needed one. "CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. You should only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms," says the CDC's guidance on COVID-19 protection.there was "no specific evidence" to suggest there was any"particular benefit" to the mass public wearing masks.
