Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade, ending constitutional protection of abortion rights via expressnews

Such an explicit reversal of the nearly 50-year-old legal precedent once seemed unlikely, or at least not so immediate, just two years after former President Donald Trump appointed Amy Coney Barrett to the court, cementing its conservative bent. Legal scholars had speculated that the newly emboldened majority could move piecemeal, unraveling Roe gradually until it had little practical effect.

Alito was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett — the last three justices were all appointed after 2016, by former President Donald Trump. In a somber rebuke, the court's three liberals wrote,"With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent."With the protections outlined in Roe and subsequent rulings overturned, states are now free to restrict or criminalize abortions.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott quickly praised the decision, and said Texas is doing more than ever to help pregnant women"so that they can choose life for their child."
