The Supreme Court rules 7-2 that a 40-foot World War I memorial cross on Maryland public land does not violate the separation between church and state
Although the justices differed on their rationales for upholding the cross, Justice Samuel Alito, writing the opinion of the Court in part, based his conclusions on the fact that the cross"carries special significance in commemorating World War 1.""The cross is undoubtedly a Christian symbol, but that fact should not blind us to everything else that the Bladensburg Cross has come to represent," Alito said.
