.ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT: Supreme Court issues historic ruling saying federal employment discrimination laws protect LGBTQ employees: 'It is hard to overstate the significance of this.'
Helpful information about the highest court in the United States.Monday on a historic case about LGBT employment discrimination, with the majority deciding that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, also applies to gay or transgender people.
It was a 6-3 decision, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Neil Gorsuch joining the more liberal side of the court -- Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Stephen Breyer. Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion, while Justices Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas dissented."Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result," Gorsuch wrote.
"But," he continued,"the limits of the drafters' imagination supply no reason to ignore the law's demands. When the express terms of a statute give us one answer and extratextual considerations suggest another, it's no contest. Only the written word is the law, and all persons are entitled to its benefit."and concerned three cases involving individuals who say they were fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
