'...Having this big of an audience listening to my music. It's been like a shock to me and my family and everyone that I know.' –BENEEMUSIC
On the surface, BENEE’s story is one you might be familiar with: girl uploads covers to SoundCloud, girl is discovered by a well-known producer, girl achieves worldwide fame. The real story, as it often is, is a little more complicated. Stella Rose Bennett, the Auckland, New Zealand native more commonly known as BENEE, was born with music in her DNA, courtesy of a musically-inclined family who also fostered her sense of bold self-expression.
Catching up with her from her Auckland home, BENEE’s inviting personality shines through the Zoom feed. We’re feeling a bit of the loopiness of quarantine time, it’s late morning for her and late evening for me, so we choose tropical beach and spacey night themed backgrounds to spice things up. “I grew up listening to a bunch of different stuff that my parents played me, Radiohead and Björk but also Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse,” she says. “Those female figures were a huge inspiration; these super powerful women who are unafraid of saying anything, super honest and raw definitely encouraged me to just say whatever the heck I want in a song.”While she dabbled in music from a young age, she took some detours that led her to water polo and a two-week long stint at university.
“I thought that, even if I was to have people listen to my music, it would happen over a longer period of time, having this big of an audience listening to my music” the 20-year-old says. “It's been like a shock to me and my family and everyone that I know. I'm trying not to overthink things, [because] I'm very good at freaking myself out.”, giving her time to catch up with her feelings on success.
Right now, that means planning for an unknown future. “I don't know when I'll be able to travel. I don't even know when I’ll play a show again. Hopefully not too long,” she says. The biggest thing she’s looking forward to though, is putting out more music.
