Def Leppard, Journey and Cheap Trick course-corrected for the 2022-2023 'Stadium Tour' in all the best possible ways.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – No one ever went broke leaning into nostalgia. Even when tinged with more evident melancholy, nostalgia always seems to hit the spot. Or at least the wallet.Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neal can’t sing anymore. Poison singer Bret Michaels’ vocal skills, reduced to barks and shouts these days, are creeping back faster than his hairline. Joan Jett was there and gone in a flash – amazing, as always, but better in a club or theater.
There was a celebratory vibe from the get-go for the 40,000+ who gathered. Even a smattering of “much-needed” mid-show rain couldn’t dampen the fun.Frontman Robin Zander was delightful and charismatic as always. The ever-quirky Rick Neilsen trotted out some of the zaniest guitars in his collection, with plenty of hot licks to match. Bassist Tom Petersson kept the bottom-end level, sporting a sun hat that dwarfed his head.
Pontiac used to have a slogan in 1984, “We Build Excitement.” That’s exactly what Neal Schon and team did during an 18-song set. The metaphor is apt because by 1984, Journey was building on top of excitement. They were on top of the world and selling out stadiums. Surely this band is Schon’s baby and both he and keyboardist-guitarist Jonathan Cain are the long-haul holdovers from the band’s golden era, keeping things authentic and strong.
He and firebrand Schon made a formidable one-two punch during “Dead or Alive,” “Stone in Love” and the title track from Journey’s massive 1981 massive album, “Escape.” The rest of the set was an absolute jukebox, leaving the crowd happy and damp – heck, even Mother Nature was satisfied.
