The decision was made due to declining use of Barberton’s labor and delivery unit, Summa Health President and CEO Dr. Cliff Deveny said in a memo to employees.

“Making this decision now allows us time to plan for a seamless transition and to better serve our mothers-to-be, their newborns and their families by creating a comprehensive center at our state-of-the-art facilities within the Dr. Gary B. and Pamela S. Williams Tower on the Akron campus,” he said.Nearly 4,500 births took place across the Summa system in 2020.
All affected employees at Summa Health Barberton will be offered jobs on the Akron campus or in other areas of Summa Health, Deveny said. It wasn’t immediately known how many employees will be affected.
