The city plans to file a condemnation petition ito acquire the Moses Rose's Hideout sports bar for construction of an Alamo museum and visitor center.

Moses Roses Hideout bar owner Vince Cantu walks away after addressing the City Council on Jan. 26 to urge them to vote against the proposal for eminent domain of his property. The council ultimately voted in favor for the measure if an agreement could not be reached with Cantu on a purchase price. After nearly four months of back-and-forth, the city of San Antonio has abandoned efforts to reach a deal to purchase a bar near the Alamo and is preparing to launch an eminent domain proceeding.

The city plans to file a condemnation petition on behalf of the Texas General Land Office in its next step to acquire the Moses Rose’s Hideout sports bar to clear space for an Alamo museum and visitor center.if the partners in a massive Alamo makeover — the city, Land Office and nonprofit Alamo Trust — could not reach an agreement with the owner to purchase the property at 516 E. Houston St.The city offered $4 million in February and $5.26 million in April.

Cantu and his lawyer also have quibbled with the Alamo project partners on its independent consultants' assessments of the value of the business and property, accusing the Alamo Trust of attempting a “bait and switch.” Kate Rogers, the trust’s executive director, has called those claims “categorically false,” saying Cantu has shown a “refusal to operate in good faith” and made “ongoing attempts to obscure the facts” to prevent construction of the museum complex.

The new facility, set to open in 2026, will cover more than 100,000 square feet, providing interpretation of the Alamo’s entire 300-year history as a mission and battle site, community plaza and restored historic site.“After numerous attempts by Alamo Trust, Inc., the Texas General Land Office, and the city of San Antonio to negotiate a sales price for the property with Mr. Vincent Cantu, the city has taken action to move forward with the eminent domain process.
