A stretch of Highway 4 is closed in both directions east of Port Alberni due to an out-of-control wildfire.
, the City of Port Alberni says all traffic heading eastbound out of the municipality is being turned around.
“The hump will be closed until further notice. Please avoid travelling out of town until the highway is re-opened,” the city said. The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is in steep terrain, and a helicopter is bucketing to support the two initial attack crews assigned to the fire. A wildfire is deemed out of control when it is continuing to spread and not responding to suppression efforts, according to the service.Sign up for the CHEK Now daily email newsletter to get breaking news and the day's top stories sent to your email.“Fire is highly visible from Highway 4 at Cameron Lake. Boaters on Cameron Lake should stay clear of helicopter bucketing dip sites,” it said.
Hwy #4 is closed due to a fire near Angel Rock. All traffic heading eastbound out of town is being turned back to Port Alberni. The hump will be closed until further notice. Please avoid travelling out of town until the highway is re-opened.
