Three crashes involving stolen trucks, followed by the theft of an Arlington County ambulance, led to a chase into the District that involved numerous additional collisions on Saturday, Virginia state police said.
The scene on I-395 near the George Washington Parkway and the 14th Street Bridge. No serious injuries were reported, but main roads in the area of the 14th Street Bridge were shut down, and backups were reported near the bridge on Interstate 395 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
About a minute later, the same truck was in a multivehicle crash on Interstate 395 near the approach to the bridge, the state police said. After the ambulance was taken, state police tried to stop it, but it went into reverse and struck a state police car, the state police said. At least half a dozen people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries incurred during the incident, state police said.The pursuit ended in the District when the ambulance struck a parked car at 14th and D Streets SW, less than a mile from the 14th Street Bridge.
